Nyu Graduate Admissions Questions asked

Resolved Question: PLEASE ANSWER: NYU loans for psychology student?

I HAVE A VERY BIG DECISION ON MY HANDS I am 22 recently graduated from San Francisco state university with a 3.85 overall GPA and 1240 GRE score. I want to get a phd in psychology and be a professor at the university levl but for now I'm doing a Masters. I had plans to start my MA at sf state in fall but yesterday (coincidentally on the day of my grad party) got a letter from NYU with an offer of admission to the MA program there! Sounds like a no brainier except when you consider that NYU is giving me no financial aid is 30,000 a year compared to sf state which is 5,000 a year. with living expenses factored in I would have about 100 thousand in loans at the end of two years in comparison to 30 thousand in loans if I went to sf state. Is the prestigious name of NYU enough to compensate for the massive loans? Im hoping going to NYU will help me get into a better phd program down the road. But who knows... IM VERY CONFUSED! Please help THANKS =)link broken... gave u a thumbs down more

Voting Question: NYU (Stern) and Columbia Admissions HELP!!!?

I am an undergrad from Rutgers Business School-Newark who has worked full time in a "real job" my whole college career. I will be graduating with a 3.45 ish GPA and am taking the GMATs in the fall. In addition i have started my own marketing and consulting firm. I will have strong letters of recommendation. I am wondering how someone with my credentials will fare in the admissions decision?RE: work experience. I was an Inside Administrative Service Delivery Manager for a 3.7 B 10K+ employee company. Then a Sales Person (account manager) for the same company. I left there to become a Sales Coordinator for a 5 person Strategic Business Unit who specialized in Public Sector Systems Integration at a different company. Hope this helps more

Voting Question: Do I have a chance of getting into NYU or UCLA?

I plan on majoring in film production and I've spent a lot of time focusing on my work experience. As a result my resume is very impressive for someone of my age and my portfolio is, I believe, very nice. NYU, UCLA and USC are of course my top choices but I'm worried my gpa will hold me back. In high school I only had a 2.3 gpa (wow, I know, ha ha.) I graduated high school a semester early and entered college. After a year and a half, I have a 3.2 gpa, which is better but still not top notch. Apart from my work experience, I have a laundry list of extra curricular activities: Member of High school film society Member of High school poet society Four years of piano Two years of classical voice One year of violin Volunteer at local food bank Volunteer at local homeless shelter Volunteer at local Red Cross My SAT I score was a 2200 and I got a 700, 700 and 750 on my three SAT subject tests. So my strengths are my work experience which include internships, student work and professional work. I've been very lucky work wise in the field of film. My personal statement and recommendations are, I believe, also very good and my portfolio is quite nice. I am hispanic if that pushes the odds in my favor and unfortunately come from a very low income family. I don't know if those things effect admission standards. I don't want to be completely conceited, lol. It is my gpa I think that will hold me back. I'm afraid they won't consider anything because it is not so high. Anyone with more experience, please let me know. Thanks! more

Voting Question: Can I get into NYU Steinhardt School of Education (Graduate School)?

I'd like to apply to NYU Steinhardt School of Education for graduate school. I've been trying to search information to see if I measure up. Right now as an upcoming senior in undergrad, I have a 3.34 GPA, have done a semester abroad, and have been a teacher assistant in my field of study. I also have a few honor societies (that I'm not active in) under my belt. I'm hoping to graduate with a 3.5. I feel like I'm average..anybody got any input? I contacted NYU and they said that I do not have to take a GRE for my specialization for admission. Also, anybody attend Steinhardt? What were your credentials and how do/did you like the school? And I have heard that it's easier to get admitted to graduate school than undergraduate, is that true? more

Resolved Question: Do I have any (and what are my) chances of getting into Harvard, UPenn, Yale, Stanford, or Columbia Univ.?

Do I have any (and what are my) chances of getting into Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Johns Hopkins, Brown, NYU, MIT, Duke Yale, Stanford, CalTech, Babson College or Columbia Univ.? I know these are some of the nation's most competitive colleges, but I just want some advice and some knowledge on the position I hold as a "standout" applicant, or a Harvard applicant. Harvard has been my dream college for many years and I want to do as much as possible to increase my chances of admission into it. Also, I am not rich due to my parents being unemployed. So how will that affect me (positively or negatively)? I am currently a High School Junior (about to be a senior in Fall 2009). I am a Indian (Asian male born in US) attending HS in NYC. I know it's kind of late to ask this question now, but I want to pretty much see where I stand now as an applicant. My overall transcript GPA is a 94.50%. I have maintained all A's with the exception of 3 high B's ( AP US History which I am going up in for 2nd term, physical education and art) on my transcript. I just took my SAT's today and think I did pretty good in math (about 750), and I will have to improve my Critical Reading and writing score (a little bit). I took the Math 1 SAT II's and got a 660, and I will be taking 3-6 more in Fall 2009. My interested majors, in preferred order, are Neuroscience, Business/ Entrepreneurship, and Philosophy. I will go with any of these and would definitely love double majors if available. I continued studying at my JHS until 9th grade, and then I graduated from my JHS being the Salutatorian. My strong subjects are math and science, and have done very well on any standardized tests involving them. I have been a part of my school's yearbook committee, and have volunteered for above 100 hours in my school library and for above 700 hours at my local church/ temple. I have also received about 100+ hours from being a part of the ARISTA National Honor Society. I have done hospital rotations with the hospital associated with my school. I was part of a 10 week (once a week) gap year Medical Internship (called HPREP) at Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, NY. I have taken a lot of college credit courses at CUNY Queens College and CUNY York College in Psychology, Sociology, Health (4 semester course), and Math Intro. to Probability and Statistics. I am also planning to take philosophy, writing, and maybe drama during the upcoming semesters. I have passed all of the classes I took with A's or B's. I have started working on my essays, and received some of my letters of recommendation (the recommendations are AMAZING!!) I have served in the Student Government of my school as Junior Grade Representative, and there's a 99% chance I'll be the Senior Grade Representative as well. For this Summer, I have applied for quite a few internships and will be doing math and/ or science [research] internships over the summer. My school doesn't offer many AP courses and doesn't offer any honors classes, but I am challenging myself with the toughest classes. This year I took AP US History, as that was the only one I could take. I will be taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP English next year. I am not sure but I might being doing the Queens Bride to Medicine program, in which I will take college level classes in Calculus, English, and Chemistry without any college credit. I am also looking forward to the Youth Justice Board gap year internship which is basically like student government in schools but having a great effect on the city and dealing with state officials. Next year I also want to join the Big Brother Big Sister club, the debate team/ mock trials, Yearbook Committee, Library Community Service, Health and Wellness Club, and I am looking forward to being president of ARISTA National Honors Society. I am also going to start my own club based on Vedantic Philosophies, and create a STAND organization group which will help with the genocide in Darfur. Also, if this helps- 2 of my cousins go to/ graduated from Columbia University. I know this was a lot of information and kind of long, but please help me with this as I am worried night and day about my admission into one of these colleges (ESPECIALLY HARVARD!!) Thank you very much in Advance! more

Voting Question: Help in deciding a college?

I know it’s lengthy … About me : I'm an above average student. I rank in the top 10% of my graduating class. I have a cumulative average of 96.0%. I scored around a 1700 on the SAT. This year I’m taking AP Calculus, Music, Law, Spanish, and Stage Design. I know that these aren't the most rigorous classes but that's because I completed ninth and tenth grade in one year. That left me with only electives for my senior year. Regarding Calculus, I have barely learned anything this year because the teacher sucks. He knows his stuff but he just doesn't know how to get it across to the class. Everything I have learned in the class has been on my own and it isn't a lot. I’m average in math and physics. Major: I'm planning to pursue a dual degree in computer/electrical engineering. Both of the following schools have this program. I have narrowed down my list of colleges to the New York Institute of Technology and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. NYIT is at max 20 minutes from my house by car. On the other hand NYUPOLY is an hour and a half away. I have to first take a bus to the train station for 30 minutes and then i have to ride the subway for exactly one hour. By the time i get there, I'm exhausted. Taking a car there is not an option as it's a very busy area. The admission process for NYUPOLY has been very irritating and stressful. It’s really a very unorganized school. Everytime I contacted the admissions office, I would get more frustrated. They waitlisted me in February and told me to come for an interview. So I went for an interview and I was told I would be put in the General Studies Program. After that I didn’t hear anything from them for approximately three months. During those three months I got accepted to NYIT, saw it ,and decided to go there as I got a full scholarship. I had decided that I would only consider poly if it made everything free. Two weeks ago I received a letter from POLY stating that I was accepted into the HEOP program. They wanted another interview. They interviewed me again and asked the same annoying questions the first counselor did. Anyway, I completed everything and then in the end he said that I have to wait another week to find out if I’m actually accepted. However he did tell me that the chances of me getting accepted were pretty high. He also said that if I get accepted I would only have to pay around $1300.00 per year. Nyit has a more of a real campus. NYUPOLY is just a couple of rotting old buildings bunched together in the middle of a super busy area. NYIT has a lush green campus with fresh air while NYUPOLY’s atmosphere is full of pollution. If I go to NYIt the education will be of moderate difficulty. But at NYUPOLY, it’s going to be very stressful. Everyone I know including my teachers want me to go here. Most freshman transfer the next year due to the stress. Only 25 percent of incoming freshmen manage to graduate in four years. NYUPOLY is one of the hardest schools in NY and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to keep up. I also don’t think I’ll do well on the placement exams since it is only on Precalculus and Calculus. I skipped Precal to go on to Cal and I didn’t do well in it because of the teacher. But then again 200 companies come to hire NYUPOLY graduates. I’ve been told that if I get through it will be worth it as I’ll easily get a job in ny. I believe that I will most likely not do well here. Both schools have outdated equipment, NYIT has professors that have Phds from Places like Harvard, nyu, etc. while POLY has some professors that have made some sort of major discovery. more

Resolved Question: How difficult is it to get into NYU's graduate school?

I am interested in attending NYU's graduate school of journalism. Does anyone know what the admissions office looks for in a student, and what one needs to be accepted. more

Resolved Question: NYU admissions questions?

I want to go to NYU for journalism. It is my dream school. I have extracurriculars out the wazoo ranging from sports to my school's yearbook. My grades aren't "wow" worthy over all three years so far. I did pretty well junior year. I will have taken about 11 AP classes by the time graduation rolls around. I've heard that if you wait until after you graduate to apply, you have a better chance of getting in because they can see your senior year grades. Is that true? and a school like NYU, what do they mostly look for?The only thing is that my GPA for the first 2 years was HORRIBLE. Let's put it like this; if this were my sophomore year, I would be on a track to not graduate HS. AKA I had under a 2.0! more

Voting Question: What are my chances of getting into Yale?

I am a US citizen but I moved to New Zealand with my family five years ago and am in my second to last year of high school. I know for sure that I want to do journalism after college, and I am pretty sure I want to attend Yale for my undergraduate and NYU (Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute) for grad school. So firstly, I was wondering if even though you can't major in journalism at Yale, would it be a good choice? And secondly, from the information I am about to give you about my current academic attainment and EC involvement, what are my chances of getting into Yale and how can I improve them? Okay, so I am chairperson of the Student Council which I have been sitting on for three years now (in New Zealand we go to high school for five years). I am editor in chief and founder of our school newspaper. I am part of various fund-raising committees for the school. I have been on the debate team for the last four years. At the end of the year, I will be working on the school year book and will be the only student to do so (there are no yearbook committees here). I am also a member of the Auckland City Youth Council (that is the city I live in). This is made up of 25 selected youths from all of Auckland that represent the youth's opinion and get to meet with the city council and members of parliament to relay the changes we (the youth) want made. I have been a member of over six sports teams at my school. My academic attainment is hard to explain, because in New Zealand we have this entirely different system. We don't get percentages or grades like A, B, C etc. Instead, everything is put into one of four categories: not achieved, achieved, merit and excellence. Last year I attained excellence for my overall year achievement. My other personal attributes include playing the guitar, and I am also a foreign correspondent for azTeen magazine. I don't know how good of a picture that paints for you, but I am hoping someone can help me! Finally, I am thinking of attending one year at the New Zealand Broadcasting School after I graduate from high school to get some experience under my belt before I head to (ideally) Yale. I thought this would be best as I graduate half a year later than those who I would be attending my freshman year of college with if I still lived in the US. Do you think this would give me any sort of edge admission-wise? THANK YOU SO MUCH! more

Voting Question: Where should I go to college?

I'm completely stuck. I am graduating early from high school, and I’m unsure where I should go to college. I want to become an artist; of any kind really. I want to do it all: paint, draw, write, etc, etc. I’m extraordinary passionate, creative, and my imaginative vision is truly “unlimited.” I was recently rejected from NYU. My dream school. The one place I felt where I was able to see myself really thrive. I wanted in terribly. I felt it in my bones, within my heart, and it ran through my veins. I’m quite upset, but wasn’t expecting admission honestly. My test scores were very low. I now live in Ohio and I am moving to Indiana this summer (I’m a junior; hence I am graduating early so I don’t have to start all over again in a new high school in Indiana.) I was accepted into: -Eugene Lang College The New School For Liberal Arts; in New York City. (shoulder to shoulder with NYU.) -DePaul in Chicago. &&& -DePauw in Greencastle, Indiana. I’m visiting them over spring break. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or personal accounts of any of these colleges? I’m unsure about DePaul. DePauw is out in the middle of no where, and I have mixed feelings about Lang. It’s a good writing school I have heard, but it’s filled with stuck-up hipsters. I’m afraid I won’t be able to get along with anyone there. I don’t know. I feel I deserve something better. I’m a bright kid, I just don’t test well. Should I even consider these colleges? I guess I just want to be happy. That happiness would have been within NYU, but now that’s completely out of the question. I only have myself to blame. Thanks for your help. more

Resolved Question: Rate: how my transcript is shaping up.. also some other things...?

Hey guys! I'm just a junior in high school in new york city, but I'm looking at universities already. So lets cut to the chase. I want to go into Business as well as Journalism My cumulative, weighted average is currently at a 90.3. My grades keep going up every single year. I just got my report card that covers 1st/2nd quarter and mid term grades. Best I've ever done at the half way mark. I'm a minority, first generation hispanic student. I'm in the honors classes. One of which includes Latin 3. Next year as a senior I'll be taking AP english. I'm ranked in the top 10% of the graduating class. But I'm holding on to that honor by a thread. I'm ranked 17th, and if I dropped to 18th, that puts me top 11% xD. hopefully I can hold onto that until it's time to apply to university. SATS? Not so great. But I've only taken it once.. got a 1510. Extra curriculars.. I've done some pretty sweet stuff. - Wrote for school newspaper in all 3 years, and I'm editor in chief now as a junior - This is my first year in mock trial, and I am playing the lead witness for the defense, next year I'll be a lawyer (it's reserved for seniors >_<) - Currently I am attending a highly selective inner city job program.. where I do training for interviews/resumes/etc. Hopefully I do land a job, that'll help my transcript a lot. Though being in this program is quite the honor. - Probably the thing that stands out most... I attended an 8 day youth leadership conference in Rochester University before this junior year. It's highly competitive. Rochester also gives all students I think a 1000 dollar scholarship automatically, so I can say "hey, look what I got from a major university :]." National Hispanic is also associated with over a hundred major universities such as NYU, Boston, Duke, etc. A major connection. - Over the summer before senior year I'll also be attending another National Hispanic program, called the Collegiate World Series. This is NYU, and again NYU sponsors some of the money. Here I'll be doing interviews and working on skills with real admission reps from major universities. As well as competing with other students. This can be a good chance to make some connections, and also the program looks great on my transcript. - Last.. I did community service from 9-11:30am every Saturday in freshman and sophmore years as an aide at my church for bible classes. This year as a junior, and also as a senior (I'll be doing the same) Saturday volunteer is dropped in favor of helping out as an asisstant, youth leader, and part time teacher when needed on tuesdays and wednesdays for high school confirmation classes. Well that covers it guys. Based on my grades, SAT, activities, how am I shaping up? As it stands, my number 1 school right now is Northeastern. I've been looking at it for months and really love it. As well as Boston University.. and boston college, way too far of a reach? Also I really do need scholarship money.. so hopefully wherever I go I am offered something. Based on what I want to do and my current profile, can you recommend some universities? I'm in new york and don't want to go any lower than say, North Carolina, don't wanna go far west past Chicago. I want a good, name brand school that I can look into. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: NYU undergraduate transfers?

Hi, I am 22 years old and I live in Florida currently attending a college. I want to get a bachelors in business majoring in management and a minor in health sector policy and management. I would like to transfer to NYU because my dad said he would pay for it since he graduated from there. I graduate in the summer with my AA. The problem is that my GPA isnt up to par. I have an accumulative 2.34, for my business administration AA, I have an overall 2.45, and for last semester I had a 3.69 GPA. Im positive that this semester I can bring my GPA even higher but the application deadline is april first and they do not have spring admission for the school of business. I really want to get in but bc i screwed around in my earlier years, my GPA is really low. Should I still apply to see if I get in? Im hispanic and I also come from a very low income area in Orlando, recently moved to Miami and started doing great in school (eye opener) THANKS SO MUCH more

Resolved Question: Will I get accepted into NYU?! Opinions!?

I just posted a question about my admissions as a transfer student at NYU so i just put all the info together so it looks nicer! I went to a private high school where my graduating class was 96. I did fairly well, the average student. I got accepted to a university right near my home and my first semester i got 3 A's (Business, sociology, and 2st year seminar), a B in Comp, and a D in science. I want to apply to NYU as a transfer student in the fall of 2009. Some more info about me... -I'll attend the summer course if i get accepted -My parents can pay my tuition without me needing financial aid (we are well off) -I am a world traveler -I have a great personality -I'll have a AMAZING teacher recommendation -Plus next semester i'll work SUPER hard since i'll be taking classes I love! -I also was editor of my high schools yearbook for 2 years, and i was also in a few clubs. -I got accepted to be a student ambassador and traveled to Australia because of that. -I'll explain my "D" a bit more. I was in a science class with all science majors. Plus I went to HOURS of tutoring, I went to the professors a few times and asked for helped. I did all the extra work. -I got (give or take a few points) around a 1220 on my SATS Is there anyway to get an interview?! Thanks so much!!! Email me please I need loads of help/info...indienglishkyfan@aol.com more

Resolved Question: extremely worried about college admissions?

Ok, so Im a junior at an extremely competitive public school on Long Island which sends A LOT of it's students to top notch schools. Since freshman year, I've been taking all honors/AP courses, and this year Im currently enrolled in 4, and planning on 9 for when I graduate HS. so here's where the bad-part comes in.... My weighted GPA thats on my transcript is an 93.3 (3.8)...which is certainly great in my opinion but apparently that doesnt mean anything for (top) colleges. and they recalculate an UW GPA with only the core classes, which would probably leave me at an 86-87 (3.3) so with a 93 GPA, I was confident with sending apps to schools like NYU , Carnegie Mellon, BC, Emory.not Ivies, but still top schools especially knowing that I have good EC's and I got a 2140 on my 2nd time taking the SAT1. but now, being that I'm a "B+" student, those schools seem WAYYYYY out of reach. should I just stop worrying or will I most likely have to settle for a school of a less-caliber (like Syracuse or Fordham) and hope to transfer to NYU after one year more

Resolved Question: nyu admissions and financial aide?

so i'm a junior in texas rights now( high school) and i was wondering if i were to apply right now, would i have a chance i have a 3.6 gpa 1250 sat 26 act i have no sports, but i am going to be on the women's rugby team next year i've been in 2 theatre productions this year i have my cna license already (nursing aide) i have only have 10 volunteer hours now, but i am going to graduate with over 100, how does this look? i want to major in something medical oh and are there any women rugby scholarships in nyu? or nyc? please help me, thanks so much oh! and about financial aide, my parents makes over $150,000 combined but they are not contributing much to my college, so will financial aide be able to help me? i'm african american if that helps anything more

Resolved Question: Do i have a chance at Phillips academy Andover (easy 10 points)?

BEFORE YOU READ: please only answer my question if you actually know a thing or two about new england boarding schools, and please give me realistic answers not the answers i want to hear. I realize that it is truly up to the school to decide but i would like to hear someone other then my family give me an answer i am usually an a student but because i switched schools for eighth grade my grades dropped (the teachers all wanted the work differently and i had never had sports practice for an hour each day until i came to my new school therefor i became exhausted). The school i am at is a college preparatory school that a few of my siblings have gone to when they were younger. My oldest sister went to Wesley(not sure if i spelled it right) my second oldest sister went to Harvard, My third oldest sister went to NYU and then my brother just graduated from Wesleyan. I have all a's except for english honors and science class. In science i have a B and in english honors i have a C plus. Both of those grades dropped because of homework, i have been extremely busy these past couple of months and thought i could do a lot more work in study hall then i actually could, and as a result these two grades dropped. But last year i had A's for the whole year and for the ssats this year were really good (at least i think so) my national percent tiles are 98 for math and 95 vocabulary and 95 for reading comprehension. Also i am a member of National Junior Honor Society, National Junior Art Honor Society, was a member of builders club (younger version of kiwanis club), have been a part of student council since 5th grade and last year was class representative. Also in French i placed 7th in the nation on a national test called Le Gran Concours (out of 2000 seventh grade french students). For instruments i play the oboe, clarinet, and the drums, also as of july i have been teaching myself how to play the piano. My brother went to North Field Mount Hermon (another boarding school, not too far from Hartford), also at school i am involved in the photography club. Plus a couple of people i know from my old school went to andover. My interview was with the senior dean of admissions and he said i did very well on the interview. All of my recommendations should be good because all of my teachers like me and know how smart i am. if you need any more info just let me know. more

Resolved Question: How selective is NYU Steinhardt - Media, Culture and Communications MA Program?

I am interested in attending Grad school at NYU Steinhardt and want to know what my chances are of getting in and what type of GRE scores I would need to give myself the best chance at admission. I've wanted to go to NYU for a long time and I finally found a major that I love that they actually have lol. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin w/ a 3.03 GPA if that helps (It would be higher had I not had one very miserable semester). I'm willing to do most anything to help my chances! What about UC-Davis? I am interested in them as well. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What do you think about Bard College at Simon's Rock?

I'm a freshman in high school (GA) and would like to do this program. It is a early entrance program. I would like to transfer to NYU or USC afterwords. I think Northwestern or BC would be other choices. If I went back to GA and went to UGA would I be instate still? My parents would still be here, and would I make Hope? I would also like to go to Columbia for graduate school. I want to go into journalism, but if I go to LA I will go for acting. Journalism is more for academics than acting. I'm a film actor, so NYU is the only school I would double major at. If I get a D or C in math this semester, would it ruin my chances at the AEP scholarship and admission? It is a teacher problem not as much because I am bad math. I can make it up next semester, but we only have 2 weeks left and think I can get a C plus in it and all A's elsewhere. I'm in all honors and an AP class. What is your feedback on this? I have already got feedback on other good higher education people. I just wanted to know your opinion on this school. What scholarships are out there since I'm just a freshman? You apply when your a sophomore. If my high school didn't give me a diploma would a GED hold me back? I have already talked to the admissions there. I just posted this again, because I saw Ranto and a few others on now. I just wanted some other feedback. Thanks so much! more

Resolved Question: Is trying out for Survivor Tv Show before college a good idea?

I have been watching Survivor since I was 6, and hardly ever miss an episode. I don't remember all of the people, but I do remember a lot. I was ecstatic when I heard that they were changing the age limit to 18. Some favorite people are: Cirie, Rupert, Elizabeth(liked her on Survivor not The View), Amber and Jerri(Season 2), Heidi and Jenna(Amazon), Amanda and many more... I am 14 now and a freshman, but am hoping it will still be there in 2012. I turn 18 on April 26, 2012. Do you have to be 18 when applying or when your on the show? I guess I would apply in Fall 2011 and go there if I get picked in Summer 2012 before college. It has always been my dream to be on Survivor, and I know how to play the game. I also know that they would pick me, lol. Do you think it will still be here? I know Survivor still gets good ratings, but will say it can get old. When would I apply, and can I? If I can't, I really don't see myself waiting another year, because I would like to study abroad. I also want to go to NYU, so would this effect my admission? Is this a good idea, and want do you think of it? Would I miss prom and graduation? We graduate in May. Any feedback is fine. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How difficult is it to get accepted into NYU?

I will be graduating next year and NYU is one of my top college choices. I have a 3.0 GPA, take AP classes, do massive amounts of volunteer work, have work experience, have done great in all of my classes, and do extra-curricular activites. However I am a little worried about my SAT scores. Does the SAT score determine admission or will the rest of my hardwork outweigh my score? Is their a good chance I can get in? more

Resolved Question: Tufts University?

I am thinking about applying to Fletcher School of International Relations and I was wondering what their minimum requirements are for their graduate program (M.A.)? Is a 3.45 GPA enough to satisfy their minimum requirements? What should the GRE scors be for a GPA of 3.45-3.50? Please advise in what steps I should to take to qualify for their admission just in case if I am below their GPA requirements. Their website does not specify anything in regards to the GPA, so I'm clueless. Please let me know if that type of GPA is good for Columbia, NYU, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Claremont, Chicago as well. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Do I have a chance in hell?

I need advice on whether I might gain admittance to a really good college. I'm talking about UT Austin, NYU, etc. This is the situation: I am a homeschool graduate. I have missed the fall deadlines, and so I will be applying for the spring admission. I have a 4.0 GPA, 4 yrs of english, science, and history, 3 yrs of math, Spanish 1 & 2, constitutional law, philosophy, economics & govt, plus one or two extras that I'm probably forgetting. BUT: I was not involved in any clubs or extracurriculars, nor did I take AP classes. I just didn't know what to do or have anyone to advise me. My original SAT score was 1830, but I know the writing score is often ignored. I got a 700 in writing and a 640 in verbal, but my math score was 490--which is why I plan to re-take it. Based on this info, what is your opinion? Do I have a chance to get into the college of my choice? I really don't want to go to Jr. college this fall. Once I start, I must have 30 credits to transfer. But I think I might have to.I DID forget one thing- I did a ten week internship with a non-profit legal org. two summers ago. And I took a class on world religions.I also plan to major in journalism. more

Resolved Question: College tuition.. money problem.. Please help??

I was accepted into my dream school NYU and not getting any financial award. My parents now have approximately 300,000 dollars in their savings and due to my dad's new unstable job he earns about 55,000 dollars a year (without any tax taken out) NYU costs about 50,000 dollars a year and my parents want me to cancel my acceptance (after I accepted the offer of admission and paid for housing and stuff) and go to a community college. What are financial options for me? Do the universities loan money to students directly (not to parents) so that they can pay eventually pay off after they graduate? I want to go to NYU even if I owe a 20,0000 debt after I get out of school and have to pay off the debt for the next 5 years after graduation. . I desperately want to go to NYU and study my *** off. Let's say I pay the full tuition in my first year and get like 3.9 GPA. Can I apply for scholarship in my second year? How generous is NYU in generally about giving out money? 36 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 34 minutes ago Looking at how much my parents have in their savings, is it too much of a selfish act, do you think, to go to NYU? Compared to others who went to 4-yr universities, am I really in a bad situation financially? more

Resolved Question: UC Santa Barbara, Lehigh U or Boston U?

I get admissions to Master in Economics program from these universities. I want some advice about which one I should attend. I am an international student from China. So besides learning academic knowledge, I want to have rich experience in the U.S. However, what I care most is which university will give me more chance in getting a good job (at least an internship) in the U.S. after I graduate. (High salary is one of the criteria of a good job in my opinion.) The cost of studying and living in these universities do be included in my consideration, but as I see graduate education as an investment which you cannot measure its return, it will be the last thing I consider. I am waiting for admission decisions from NYU, University of Southern California (USC) and Fordham U. So your advice about these three universities is also appreciated. One more thing, I cannot visit these universities before I make this decision cause I am in China. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: graduate university help!!!!?

hi all i'm an international student from india. my gre was 1300 (800 + 500) and toefl was 107. i had applied to 4 universities for MS in computer science- U PENN, JHU, NYU and U PITT. i had pretty strong SOP with 4 fairly strong LOR's from 3 professors and a company i had my training in. the problem with my profile was my acads. i only had a gpa of around 3.2/4. (i say around coz in my university we follow the percentage system in every course) so the problem is that now i have received a reject from U PENN and the rest universities are saying that they'll take around 2 weeks for the decision. but now my idiotic decision of applying to 4 universities is biting my a$$. so is there any other university which has admission open even now??? (i'm applying to north eastern univ tomorrow morning)... plz plz let me know any university or guidance. i understand there is no spoon feeding here but i have been so tense for the past few days that i cant see any hope.... also if not possible, more

Resolved Question: University of Virginia Accepted - Senior Grade Worries !?

hi i got accepted to UVa a couple months ago and after that really lost focus on school. result = 5 B's and 2 D+'s in third quarter. I am confident that I 'll graduate with mostly A's and B's , but I have a feeling I may have a C in Calculus for the final grade. Can UVa admissions be a real jerk and ask for an explanation ( and God Forbid, rescind the acceptance ?). Please note that I am an in-state student and UVa , although the 2nd most selective public school in America, is still a State run school. Also I have paid the 250 dollar admission deposit already and signed the Intent to Enroll Form. Imagine what nightmare it could be since I already have sent thank you letters to all other schools I was accepted to ( including Vanderbilt, USC and NYU ). I have asked many people no one could give a straight answer.. it is so sad.... more

Resolved Question: Be honest, what are my chances of admission as a transfer?

In high school,I was pretty much the definition of "bright underachiever".To be honest,I barely graduated, and now I'm stuck broken-hearted and kicking myself at a community college in a podunk town in southeastern Kentucky.I'm dreaming of transferring to a school in a major city in a couple of semesters (NYU,Columbia Chicago,etc..).My ACT compsite is 25 (I'm probably going to re-take it again, though) and I plan on keeping my GPA 3.5+ (Trust me,it's very do-able withthe classes I'm taking.).Do I have a chance in hell of being acceptedinto these schools,or should i be laughed at for even thinking it's possible? more

Resolved Question: Which is better?

I want to go to law school at either NYU or UC Berkeley. I am now deciding if i should stay at the state school i am at and get a very high GPA and i am in the associated student government here, or if i should transfer to NYU or Berkeley or UCLA and graduate with probably a lower gpa but from a much better institution. Any ideas on which Law school admissions would favor more? more

Resolved Question: College admissions?

I am currently a community college student in California, however with the way my schools schedules it's classes and the fact that often times only one section of certain courses will be written into the schedules I don't see myself graduating from there within even the next year. So, I've been looking at different 4yr. schools which offer what I want to major in. So far the ones I really like are Adelphia, NYU and The American University of Paris. I'll be majoring in French with a possible minor in either music, or politics. I took the SAT way back in '04, and plan to retake it and take the ACT. My GPA is about a 2.5-3.0...I was in Student gov. for a semester and SIFE for two...and, yes I have taken French courses.(since I was 12.) My question is, what would I need to get into all three of those schools? My top choice being AUP. Please, only o have gone through the admissions proccess to at least one of those three schools. And please no chatspeak. Ex: "U R gr8."I won't be transfering. I won't have a transfer degree. Sorry, if that wasn't clear. I'll be going in as a frshman with college credits, but not as a transfer. And PTK costs $75, which I wouldn't be able to afford even if I had the GPA for it. more

Resolved Question: Is it a good move to take summer classes if you want to go to grad school?

I graduated with a BA a year ago, and plan on applying to grad school for a fall 2009 start. Do you think I should take summer classes this summer so I can have a letter of recommendation from a professor who can write about my RECENT academic work? And so that the admissions people know I'm serious about my field/program interests? Or do you think it's just a waste of time? They have some really good inexpensive summer classes for continuing education students at places like Harvard Columbia, NYU etc. more

Resolved Question: Graduate School Admissions (Professor X)?

This fall I am applying to graduate programs in Middle Eastern Studies. All are top 10 programs in my field. However, my freshmen gpa was not that great. Due to it my cumulative gpa this fall will only be a 3.48 (but I have a 3.94 in my last three years). There were medical reasons for my GPA freshmen year. My GRE was a 1280. I am retaking it this summer to see if I can increase my score because it's above average but not amazing. I have also studied abroad in the middle east and have done an internship in Washington D.C. I am wondering what my chances are of being admitted to a top 10 program in my area? Below are a list of schools I am thinking of applying to: UT Austin University of Arizona University of Washington-Seattle NYU Georgetown Harvard The American University in Cairo more

Resolved Question: wil NO extra curriculum activities hurt my chances of lawschool admission?

Currently, i'm a senior in college graduating in May 2008. My GPA is 3.81. I took my first LSAT last month on September 29th and i received my grade about a week or two ago and i received a 168. Which is pretty good i think. It's not Yale or Harvard but it's still in the upper 90 percentile. The only extra curriculum requirements i have is i did an internship at a lawfirm my junior year. that's it. i didn't do anything in school. i also co-own a business which is doing really well and lets just say i won't be going into lawschool debt. i'll be ending lawschool with money in my pocket. Besides my business, internship, LSAT grade, and GPA i don't have anything else. It takes a lot of time and money running a business so i didn't have any time doing anything in school besides study a few hours a day. Will my lack of extra curriculum activities significantly hurt my chances of getting into a top 20% lawschools. For instance, i know i'm not harvard, Yale material but what about NYU? more

Resolved Question: PhD in English and Admission?

I have a MA in English and wish to continue onto a PhD program. I am only interested in NY-based graduate schools. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Pass class but failed regents?

Well, I got accepted into NYU already and I passed all my course. But I failed my physics regents! This was due to the fact that I was really sick that day. However, I have already taken more than enough science (took 4 science regents and passed 3, failed physics) courses to satisfy my NYU's minimum science requirements. So my question is, will my admission be rescind? My school has allowed every to retake the regents but is it possible for me to not take the regents since I already have more then enough credits to graduate? more

Resolved Question: When applying to law school, does it really matter if your undergrad college is very prestigious?

I go to a city university in NY, and I want to go to a top law school (Harvard, NYU, Columbia...). I haven't taken the LSATs yet, but if I get a really high score, lets say at least 170, does it really matter that I don't go to an Ivy League or prestigious undergrad college, especially since my GPA is like a 3.85, and I'm in honors programs? How much weight do admissions officers put on where you go for undergrad? I know that most people who end up in these law schools did go to the top undergrad institutions, so will it really hurt my chances of getting in if I'm not attending such a well-known college? Also, I'm finishing college in 3 years instead of 4 because I took tons of AP classes in high school and got loads of credit--will law schools think they can't really accept me since they have less to look at on my transcript, or could they be impressed that I manage to graduate quickly? Or will it have no impact? Thanks!!!! more
