Using A Mounted Router Questions asked
Resolved Question: What cable should I use to connect my antenna to my router?
I need to attach my router antenna that is mounted outside my house, to my linksys router located inside. The distance it needs to cover is about 10 feet. The connector on my antenna is N-Female. The connector on the back of my linksys router is TNC male. This is going to be for 768Kbps internet access. I have found RG-6 Quad Shielded coaxial cable and that looks like the best cable for my situation. If this is not the best, please inform me. What is RG-8? Thanks in advance moreOpen Question: PLEASE HELP! RG6 vs. RG8 coaxial cable?
Which is better for hooking up my router antenna that is mounted outside my house to my Linksys router inside? RG6 is 75-ohm and RG8 is 50-ohm. Does that make a difference with compatibility? It seems that RG6 is a general purpose coaxial cable and RG8 is for extra help in shielding out 'noise' for computer networking. RG6 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RG-6 RG8 - http://www.tech-faq.com/rg-8.shtml Please inform me which to use! Hi, I want to set up a point-to-point wifi connection from my house to my girlfriend's house which is approx 1km away. I am uncertain how to do this without having to buy expensive directional antennae and mount them on the roof. I was hoping to be able to set something up at very low cost such as using a Pringle's can antennae(http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448) or something similar to cut down dramatically on cost. I would most likely be using a pair of cheap Linksys routers with the project and was wanting some advice on what hardware and other set-up advice for the project. Thanks! We both have internet connections however they are slow. And setting up a wireless point-to-point connection would allow us to file share and share music without using our downloads and also at much greater speeds. Basically the set up I want is: [my laptop] >> [router] > [Directional antennae] <<>>[air]<<>> [directional antennae at gf's house] >> [router] >> [pc]Also we live approximately 1.02km(in a straight line) away from each other with about 20 houses in between. moreVoting Question: Properties of concrete?
Could concrete be used to make a precision casting? If a highly accurate mold was made would the concrete cure and remain the same size or shrink? If it does shrink do the internal stresses act evenly so that bowing does not occur? I was thinking of using concrete in an application of constructing a large CNC router like the type you would expect to see in the marine industry. I was thinking of having the moving COMPONENTS mounted on a series of hard plastic (or other compatible material) wheels rather than use expensive linear rails. Any thoughts? Thanks David moreResolved Question: Will 1/2" spacers work on 85 impala with longer studes?

My house is about 12 years old and was not built with network cable runs. Can someone link me to some good sites/give me some good ideas on running cables? Ideally I'd like the modem/router mounted on my board where the electric/cable/phone lines come in and then run ethernet from there. Can this be done without ripping too many walls out? Any good tricks to use existing cable runs to snake my ethernet cables along those?I have a wireless network. The question is strictly about wiring runs not how to set up a network. moreResolved Question: How can i get 2 Ethernet connections out of 1?
Hi, I have a networking problem. I have a modem connected to my router, then from that router it goes to my PC. The problem is, I need also 1 more connection, running another chord isn't an option because the cable going to my PC through a wall mounted Ethernet jack in my room. Within my room I have my PC and my Xbox 360. I need to be able to hook up my PC and 360 at the same time with that one connection, how can this be done? I was informed by someone that all I needed was a switch, well, I went and ordered one, a cheap one I might add, didn't even come with instructions, just said plug and play. I've tried connecting the chords in many different ways and to no avail. I'm relatively convinced a switch can't be used like a router. So how would i achieve those 2 connection through that one? I did look at splitters briefly, looked like a wiring fiasco above my head.Is there no reply option? But the switch, for some reason, only has 8 slots, no separate slot for internet which is throwing me off. The wireless is an option, but I'd like a wired connection before I go wirelessNope, they aren't in the same room, otherwise i would of just plugged it in straight from the router. lol moreVoting Question: What should I do for a wireless video transmission for around 200metres range without LOS?
One solution is to use an IP Camera with a router. But this is way too expensive... :-( Is there any other better method (in terms of cost and performance)? <Just to mount the camera on my Robot and control it using my LAPTOP. I have my USB web cam with me, can do something to make it transmit wireless???> moreResolved Question: What is a good depth to engrave wood?
I want to use my CNC machine that is mounted with a router to engrave a design into wood. What is a good depth to set? moreVoting Question: How can I stretch a 802.11g connection over a mile?
I'm would like to stretch my home network's wireless LAN signal to a construction site in a parking lot 1 mile away. I'm at that coffee house 3-4 times a week, and I would really like to access the internet from there. I live on a 2 story house, and I believe if I extend a 5-8 foot mast from the chimney, the highest point of my house, I can get line of sight with the coffeehouse. Any lower and it would pass over several apartment complexes for half a block. I currently own a Linksys WRT54G router and a Lenovo X60t Laptop equipped with an internal networking card, and I'm willing to take the steps and pay the cash to make it work. For distances like these, what kind of hardware would I need? I'll worry about security later, I just want to know how practical this will be. I know I will need a directional antenna for both ends, and a network card with an external antenna to connect the laptop to the high gain antenna. Can you recommend some specific hardware I can use for this setup, such as a quality directional weatherproof access point to mount on the mast? What other hardware will I need for this setup? Thanks. Also forgot to include the site I was looking at when I rewrote this question: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/outdoor_ap/index.html It has a Macguyvered solution, to take a common WAP, stick it in a plastic box, and put it outside. I would like something a little more.... Durable. Linksys offers an outdoor antenna for Wireless N routers, but its Omnidirectional.A high gain, sub $100 directional antenna with LOS seemed to work for this tester: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2859 I'm not looking to set up something business quality, just for personal casual use. "YouHaveAFineAss"s product suggestions seem a bit too high end for my purposes. my Price range is within $100-$250, the laptop solution is a fixed mount. I failed to mention that the Laptop will also be connected at other places than the construction site, such as a Starbucks nearby, but still have LOS to the location of the house. I'm actually looking for a direction version of this product: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859687870&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=8787039789B50 Sorry for the mistake. moreResolved Question: Why do my routers keep going out?
I have to replace the router on my computer every 5 months or so. I've bought cheap ones and expensive ones. They just stop working sudden of all. I try to reinstall them--reset them: no dice. The only thing that works is buying a new one. Details below. I'm interested in three things: Do you have the same experience? Do you have ideas on why I'm so hard on routers? Do you know a problem I can be having that's easy to fix. I fully recognize I'm doing something wrong, so it's not rude to suggest that. It's a Lynksis Wireless G broadband router (2.4 Ghz). So how do they fail? The lights stay on, but they seem to fade and they otherwise just stop working (I have to plug the cable in the back of my main computer, and then. of course, only it has internet). Have they all failed in the same way? I'd say yes Are they wired or wireless? Wireless (I mean it has cables going to the computer, but it says wireless right on it). Did all communications fail? No, I can still get internet if I take the router off and just plug the internet wire directly in the computer. Do all the lights just go out? No, that's never happened. Did you try another power supply? No. Are you plugged into a UPS, surge protected power strip or into the wall? It's a strip, but maybe not surge protected--I don't think it is. Noting else is broken though. How do you test them to prove they have failed? See above. How long do you hold the reset button in? A few seconds. I keep the router on top of the base about a foot and a half from the wall. But I used keep on old one mounted on a wall, and it broke, too. moreResolved Question: Vuze ISO file trouble?
* Operating System and version: Windows Vista * Java version: Standard edition 6 * Azureus version: Vuze * Internet Service Provider: Time Warner. Road Runner * Using a Router with Network Address Translation? Answer: Yes * Using a Wireless Connection? Answer: Yes Have you tried a wired connection instead: No I downloaded an ISO file just today. I was instructed to mount it on Alcohol 120%. I have made it this far but am now stuck. I can't find the "setup.exe" The instructions are as follows Instructions: 1. Mount ISO on Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120%. 2. Double click setup.exe. 3. Install normally. Thanks in advance for any advice moreResolved Question: Questions about DDWRT?
I have various hotspots in my neighborhood and was thinking of putting a linksys router on my wifi dish. My dish is mounted on a programmable TV rotor which I eventually want to mount on the roof. I would first like to know how user friendly the DDWRT firmware is. I.E. my goal is to simply rid my PC of the antenna coax (allowing me more freedom as to where I put the PC and possibly ridding myself of signal loss) and mounting the router directly on the dish. Am wondering firstly, will a wireless PC have full control of the router?....secondly, will I easily be able to pick and choose which connection I want to use without having to go thru a ritual with the software? I wont be using the POE if that clears anything up. moreResolved Question: What material do I need and how do I connect it together so that the CAT5 wall mounts in each bedroom work?
So, in the electric box area hidden in one my closets, there is a bundle of blue CAT5 cables that do not have the RJ45 connectors. My plan is to buy a patch panel and punch in the wires from each CAT5 cable from each bedroom. I'm pretty stumped from there. In the patch panel, there are 12 ports and I will be using about 4 of them. I've bought 4 small patch cables, but I don't know if I'm supposed to connect the patch cables from from the patch panel to the router, or to somewhere else? Can someone help me please? Thanks. moreVoting Question: Can I use a cantenna to send a wifi signal 700 ft. though a single line of trees and mostly empty space?
I live in a rural area. There aren't many signals to interfere with (no one else with a router for miles). I want to share my signal with my neighbors and I was hoping that a cantenna would be an inexpensive solution to my problem. Also, will the signal make it there through a window, or will the cantenna need to be mounted outside? Will my neighbors need a bridge at their house, or will the signal from the cantenna be strong enough? Thanks. moreResolved Question: How to stop my router from corrupting downloads?
I am using a 585v6, for the past 2 months most of my browsers downloads have been corrupted, the same applies to the ps3 and my laptop. I am not behind a firewall, I even went into the terminal and disabled it, and the intrusion detection feature. I know for sure its my router because I did try it with my old router and all went fine. Is there a way to troubleshoot these kind of issues? It only happen to somes ites. it shouldn't be a closed ports issue, because if it was I wouldn't be able to access at all. any suggestions? btw I tried to upgrade the firmware but its a .bin...tried to mount it on a cd but it says the file is not an image. am so cluelessI don't really get the updating process, rephrase please :\ moreResolved Question: Why can't I receive and mix multiple wireless lavalier mics using only one receiver?
I want to do on-the-move camcorder action following four people wearing wireless lav mics. I don't have the budget or the patience to employ/train a sound man (which is why I'm not using a boom). Based on what I've read from dealers and manufacturers, it seems that I am expected to carry four different receivers, some piece of extra equipment to mix and balance them...not to mention the camcorder all at the same time! If I can have four different broadband wireless internet connections from a single wireless router...why can't I receive and mix multiple wireless lavalier mics using only one receiver...handily attached to the tripod mount under my camcorder?! I would think this is common sense, but apparently don't fully understand the subject...could someone explain? moreResolved Question: WiFi Experts: Rural internet setup--want to share to another building.?
I live in a metal cabin recently build out in the country. I have a wireless high-speed internet connection that I want to share to my shop building, which is about 500ft away. Unfortunately, there is no way (short of trenching) to run a hard wire. My current setup is using a USR8054 wifi router for my home use (metal cabin). The router has fixed antennas, so I cannot connect a directional antenna. My idea is to connect a router to the existing USR router via Cat5 mounted in the corner closest to the shop so that I can install a directional antenna (looking at Cantenna) directly to that router's antenna port outside the building. There are no trees, structures, or anything else in between these two buildings. In my shop, I would have a directional antenna connected to the LAN card or to a third router. Would this work? Can you connect router-to-router to share wifi? If so, how? Any other suggestions on making this work? Thanks for your help! moreResolved Question: IP Surveillance Cameras for home use?
I want to buy 2 IP Surveillance cameras for my home. I want it to be wireless connection(meaning no cable running from the camera to the router) and it has to be wall mounted. Does anybody have any experience with using these, if so what brands do you recommend. moreResolved Question: Can you help my wireless network problems?
I have no wired Ethernet in my house, and no support for powerline products because of my house’s age. Therefore, I need to use wireless to share my Internet access. I started off with an old, white, Netgear, wireless g router with one 3 in. antenna. It transferred 1.0 Mbps on channel 11, 150 ft. across my house to a 5dBi antenna taped to the wall with a 6 ft. extension cable. Channel 6 did not reach the computer. I bought a used Linksys WRT54G v6 router from eBay and one 4dBi antenna with a 10 ft. extension cable to mount high up. One antenna was broken, but it still worked great for about a week at 18.0 Mbps on Channel 6. Recently, the wireless feature stopped working unless I rebooted it almost constantly. I already upgrade to the latest Linksys firmware. I failed to install DD-WRT because I am not very technologically skilled. It is impossible to move my router and modem location.I am considering one of these two products: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124037 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156226 Suggestions? moreResolved Question: Should I buy a wireless n router?
I started off with an old, white, Netgear, wireless g router with one 3 in. antenna. It transfered 1.0 Mbps on channel 11 all the way across my house to a 5dBi antenna taped high up on the wall with a 6 ft. extension cable. Channel 6 didn't even reach that computer. I bought a used Linksys WRT54G router from eBay and one 4dBi antenna with a 10 ft. extension cable to mount high up. It worked comparably great for about a week at 18.0 Mbps on Channel 6, but then stopped working. DD-WRT failed to install, but I did upgrade to the latest Linksys firmware. I have two desktops in my office, one desktop in my bedroom across the house (the one with issues), a three laptops that are used closer than my bedroom, and don't have issues unless the router needs to be rebooted. It is impossible for me to move my router and modem location, and I have no non-surge protected outlets for powerline networking. Now, I want to buy a wireless n router. I have half a mind to buy about 300 ft. of ethernet cable to route it to my room. Would a wireless n router really help me? I'm looking to buy the following router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156226 cause the reviews seem good. It has a claimed range of 500 ft, which is more than enough to reach my bedroom.1.) I live in a rural area. My wireless network is the only one I can detect. 2.) My house is old. There is no wired ethernet. 3.) My house is old. I made space to plug in powerline wall mounts I bought a long time ago, into non-surge protected wall outlets but they still don't work. moreResolved Question: Long Range Wifi?
Heres my situation. I have a router in my house that transmits wireless internet. I want to send this wireless internet to a building 330m away using homemade cantenas, but theres a big building in the way. My first question is do I need a cantenna on my house? My second question is will this work? Could I mount a cantenna on the roof of the big building, send it to another cantena accross the roof which is pointed at the building I want to have wifi. Is there anyway that the building receiving wifi doesn't have to have any equipment? Can cantennas transmit to each other?Could you please tell me if the building I want wifi in needs anything to receive the cantenna signal? And do I need an cantennna on my house? I have the Router mounted 4? feet off the floor with no obstructions. I'm really agrivated. I bought a Porter Cable 892 2-1/4 h.p router, than I read mixed reviews. It came with a rebate. I will not use it everyday. also I got the bigger one for table mount, and to be stronger for hardwoods. Is 1/2 hp that big of a deal? I have a mac network consisting of a NAX (a maxtor 1TB shared storage II drive) to which 2 macs (runing tiger 10.4.7) are connected via a switch. The switch is connected to an airport extreme which connected via a WiFi link to an airport express which is connected to my DSL modem. The airport express thus acts as the router for the swtich. For some reason, while I can mount the maxtor NAS drive on the mac, it takes AGES to delete files from that drive (actually slower than copying files to it). Moving 1000 files to trash (about 10 MB say) will take about 10 minutes. When using retrospect to copy files onto the drive i get about 6 MB/s throughput which a bit slow (since I am using a 1GBps switch) but ok. why is deleting so slow? moreResolved Question: An Issue of Space....... I'm having to redesign my home (a bit of remodeling) so this seems like the ideal opportunity to make the most of my office space. The plan is to hide away most of the computer kit in a walk-in wardrobe; using wireless technology for the modem, keyboard, mouse, etc. The only major item left out will be monitor (which will be a wall mounted new flat screen 21" model). the problem is the PC itself will be some distance away, will this cause a lag or picture distortion? Distance equal to 30ft of cable running in wall cavity and loft space. Can this be done? My other option was to scrap the new monitor and buy a good laptop; networking with the PC What should i do ?? moreTop Using A Mounted Router Links
